The Quantum World – Shadow Physics and Time Leaps

Quantum mechanics is one of the greatest achievements of modern physics and describes nature with remarkable precision; at the same time, however, it is also completely counterintuitive. It involves phenomena such as particles passing through walls, particles moving along multiple paths simultaneously, and laws of nature that would operate differently in a mirror-reversed world. Today, physicists can use this knowledge to develop cutting-edge technology such as quantum computers or quantum sensors, but even the most fundamental aspects of the theory that governs the laws and processes of our world remain unknown to most people.

In this talk, Leon Advena, a member of the STScI association and a master’s student in physics, will provide insight into some of the most fascinating aspects of quantum mechanics, addressing questions such as: What exactly are quanta? Why was Einstein wrong when he said, “God does not play dice”? And what’s the story behind Schrödinger’s cat? The lecture requires no prior knowledge of physics and involves no mathematics whatsoever.

Afterward, there will be an opportunity for a question-and-answer session as well as a guided tour of the observatory.
