On April 25, a mild spring evening, the “Wolf Class” from the FCGB Elementary School in Wiehl, along with a few interested parents, gathered at the school observatory in Schnörringen to swap the classroom for outer space for a change.
After a guided tour of the seminar building, the school labs, and the adjacent stations equipped with medium-sized telescopes, they discovered the largest optical telescope in North Rhine-Westphalia—a real highlight—and saw it in action.
The pupils watched with fascination as the various telescopes were demonstrated to them, peered through a filter at the setting sun—which revealed an astonishingly speckled surface—and, as darkness fell, observed the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter at high magnification. In the process, they also witnessed a solar eclipse on Jupiter when its moon Io passed between the Sun and Jupiter.
