FIRE IN THE OBSERVATORY…

…was the subject of a training exercise by our volunteer fire department in Heide. After the head of operations, Felix Monscheuer, had inspected our facility a few days earlier, a fire suddenly broke out in our seminar room last Wednesday. Heavy smoke, fire alarms, and screams from the seminar room! Heavy equipment was needed to rescue people. The emergency vehicle arrived quickly, water hoses were laid out, and everyone worked professionally and hand in hand. The fire was extinguished. Unfortunately, one of the two association members who were caught in the fire in the bedrooms could not be saved. The STScI will discuss who that will be.

After the operation and the great excitement, the fire brigade still found time to take a look at our instruments and view the planet Jupiter and the moon. The observatory team would like to thank the 11 colleagues for their voluntary work to ensure the safety of our learning center.
