In order for a telescope to accurately correct for the Earth’s rotation and accurately track objects in the sky, its polar axis must be aligned exactly parallel to the Earth’s axis of rotation. To achieve this, one can use the so-called “Drift Alignment Method” by finely positioning the mount in azimuth (horizontal) and elevation (vertical). Since the north-south direction and also the altitude were already roughly adjusted in advance, this means in our case a repeated fine adjustment by means of a dial gauge and checking the drift in the eyepiece. The corresponding single steps take the longer the more precisely the position is adjusted. When a good result is achieved after a few nights, the floor covering can be inserted.
